Mit der Alterung unserer Gesellschaft nimmt auch die Belastung (Burden of Disease, s. Kap. 10.1.2) durch nichtübertragbare Krankheiten wie Adipositas, Diabetes mellitus, bösartige Tumoren, Muskel-Skelett-Erkrankungen und psychische Störungen zu (s.Kap. 8). Es gilt, Ansätze zu finden, mit deren Hilfe wir die Entstehung von nichtübertragbaren Krankheiten besser verstehen und neue Therapie- und Präventionsmöglichkeiten entwickeln können. Ein solcher Ansatz ist der Life Course Approach (Lebenslauf-Ansatz). Er integriert eine zeitliche und eine soziale Perspektive, sodass aktuelle Gesundheits- und Krankheitsmuster im Kontext der individuellen oder gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung verstanden werden können
